Playa La Playita: The Calm Beach Next to Las Galeras Village
A short hop from the village
La Playita sits a little west of Las Galeras village, close enough to walk if you do not mind a short stroll in the sun, or a quick moto ride if you would rather not. It is the beach locals point you to when you have a free afternoon: no boat to arrange, no early start, just sand, palms and water. It is also where Tour Nicolas is based, so it is an easy place to start or end a day with us.
Swimming in calm water
The beach faces a sheltered stretch of the bay, so the water is usually calm and shallow near the shore, which makes it one of the easiest places around Las Galeras for a relaxed swim, and a good choice for children and less confident swimmers. Conditions still depend on the wind and swell, so take a look before you go in, swim where others are swimming and ask if you are unsure.
Snorkeling near the reef
A little way out from the beach there are rocks and patches of reef where you can see small tropical fish and corals with just a mask and snorkel. Stay in calm conditions, keep away from boats, do not stand on or touch the coral, and go with a friend. If you enjoy it, a snorkeling or diving trip by boat takes you to clearer, deeper sites along the coast.
Food, shade and the best time of day
There are simple beach restaurants along the sand serving fresh fish, tostones and cold drinks, so you can easily spend the whole afternoon. Bring cash in Dominican pesos. Mornings are usually the calmest and clearest time for snorkeling, while late afternoon is softer, cooler and lovely for a swim before sunset. Shade comes from the palms, so mind falling coconuts, and take your rubbish with you.
